Review
Written early in Zimmer's career, A League of their Own typifies what I like about his music; subtle, elegant, and wistful melodies performed by orchestra. Conducted by Shirley Walker, the music is at once tender, inspiring, and nostalgic. The orchestral colours, while varied, create a sense of an older time, when life was simple, and sweet. The track "Life goes on," a longing, and gorgeous piece of music, says it all with its warm textures and heartfelt piano performances; life never sounded so good. The second, and final score track is "Final Game," a cue capturing the humour, delight, and excitement of playing baseball. It's ten minutes of pure fun, scored at a rollickingly fast pace, in the traditional orchestral fashion with no (obvious) use of synthesizers. In all, a wonderful score from Hans that managed to capture the emotion and atmosphere of the film quite well; a terrible shame the music in the opening moments of the film did not make the commercial CD release. Some trivia: James L. Brooks, who Hans worked with on I'll Do Anything, and As Good As It Gets, first met Zimmer at a preview screening of A League of their Own. Impressed with the way Hans was "chain-smoking and chain-talking- each with an accent," Brooks figured him to be a gifted producer! They have since become close friends, and remain so till this day. - Alain Phomphoukhao (tdap@hotmail.com) Credits Music Composed by
