Review
Comprised of two lengthy score cues, K2, much like the film, is an epic from start to end. With a music palette ranging from elegant and understated orchestral beauty, to fast and syncopated electronic rhythms, Zimmer paints a picture of triumph, heroism, tragedy, and full-blown adrenaline pumping action. The track "The Ascent" opens with harsh ominous tones, seguing into an intoxicating electric guitar performance (courtesy of Zimmer regular, Pete Haycock). The music then builds, and builds, continually reminding us of the inherent danger of the treacherous climb up K2, while replying with subtle, but heroic passages. Then there are moments of reflection; Zimmer's exquisite orchestral string writing appears, complimented by a longing and sad guitar piece- it's pure magic. Further up "the ascent," tragedy strikes, and "that" classic Zimmer emotion makes its presence known in one of the most moving solo cello elegy's you're ever likely to hear. The lengthy opus of the first thus track ends. The second track doesn't quite match the intensity of the first track, but nevertheless has its own moments of beauty and grandeur (plus a cool "extended" version of the sad/reflective theme I mentioned earlier). In all, an absolute masterpiece- there are simply too many superlatives to describe this score! Some trivia: Zimmer's score was removed from the American print of the film. - Alain Phomphoukhao (tdap@hotmail.com) Credits Music Composed by
